The Selection

OK, here's another dystopian book for you! This book is called The Selection by Kiera Cass and it takes place in the far future when Canada and the United States have combined after WWIV or WWV to make a new country called Illea. America Singer's caste is 5. Wondering what a caste is? Well it's sorta like your spot on the Social Pyramid. People who are caste as one's are members or relatives of the royal family. The higher your number, the more money you have. The castes go all the way down to eight, so America isn't that far from the bottom. Ever since she was a child America's large family has struggled to fill their stomachs every night. But that doesn't stop America from saving a little bit of her food every Saturday night. What does she do with the food? Well she sneaks out to the tree house in her back yard and gives it to Aspen Ledger her secret boyfriend. Aspen is a six, so his money and food problems are even worse than America's. One night in the tree houses Aspen convinces America to sign up for The Selection- a once in a lifetime competition where 35 girls from all over Illea between the ages of sixteen to 20 are "randomly" chosen to go to the palace and fight for the heart of Prince Maxon, the future king of Illea. But America doesn't want to be with Maxon, she wants to be with Aspen. But Aspen does have a point, if you get chosen to be in The Selection, then your family gets a large amount of money. Eventually, America agrees just to make Aspen happy, but when she signed up she thought that there was no chance of her being picked out of thousands of girls! But the drawing isn't so random after all. America does end up getting picked. So what's the big deal right? Can't she just flunk out of it so she can be with the man she really loves? Well it's not that simple. Something happens between America and Aspen... and the money really would be good for America's family too. Wanna know what happens? Read The Selection by Kiera Cass to find out. -Victoria

The Immortal Rules

Close your eyes and imagine a world completely ruled by vampires, well that's Allison Sekemoto's world. The Immortal Rules takes place in the far future, when over half of the human race has been wiped out thanks to this pesky disease called the Red Lung Virus. The vampires have stepped up and built huge cities throughout the world. Allison (Allie) lives in the fringe- the outermost circle of a vampire city named New Covington. She is an unregistered, which means that she doesn't have to give blood to the vampires that live in New Covington every two weeks like the registered people do. Sounds pretty good hugh? No. In exchange for being a vampire's blood bag, you get food, shelter and a job. Since Allie is unregistered, she doesn't get any of those things. Allie has to fend for herself everyday, sometimes eating things that even a rat wouldn't eat. But she does have her gang- Rat, Stick, and Lucas- who look out for her. They all camp out in an abandoned school. One night, Allie finds a huge food stash, but the only problem is, it's in a moldy old house outside the protective walls of New Covington. What's the problem? You may ask. The problem is that outside the walls of the vampire cities, there are rabids- insane vampires that have been infected with the Red Lung Virus themselves. You really don't want to run into one, 'cause they'll tear you apart in a heartbeat. When Allie finds this food stash, she immediately alerts her gang. Eventually, she convinces them all that the need to go get that food ASAP, even if it does mean going outside the city walls at night. They all escape through hidden sewer tunnels and fin the stash. Then something goes horribly wrong, it gets too dark, too fast. Allie has to watch her friends get torn apart by rabids, and eventually, she gets taken down by a pack of them as well. Suddenly, a vampire named Kanin comes and he gives Allie a choice, she can either die, or become a vampire. Allie's survival instincts kick in and she chooses to become one of the monsters that she's hated since she was a child. Kanin becomes Allie's teacher, and he teaches her everything that Allie has to know about being a vampire. One day, Allie and Kanin get separated and Allie can't go back to New Covington. Lost, and alone, she has to wander outside the walls of the vampire city she grew up in. But not only does she have the sun and the rabids to worry about, Allie also needs blood. What will happen to Allie?! Read the Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa to find out. Genre: Dystopian/ Science Fiction -Victoria

Maximum Ride

Ever wondered what it would be like to be able to fly? Well Max wonders what it would be like to not be able to fly and have a real family. Maximum Ride is a 16 year old girl. But she's not just your average girl. She is human-avian. She's 98% human and 2% bird. But that 2% has changed her life.
Here's Max's Story:
Max grew up in a science lab with a bunch of mad scientists. But it wasn't just her. Fang, Iggy, Gazzy, Nudge and Angel were also there and they were 2% bird too. They stayed there for years, always dreaming of one day escaping. But they were never able to. There were Erasers guarding every exit. What are Erasers? Erasers are 50% human and 50% wolf. Uh-oh. So that made it very hard to escape.
But one day one of the scientists - Jeb Batchelder - helped max and the others escape! He brought the six of them to his house so they could be safe. He taught them to read and write, he taught them some combat skills, and he even taught them how to fly. Until one day he just, disappeared. No one knew for certain what had happened to him but they theorized that he wad dead. All they knew was that they were no longer safe and things were about to get crazy.

Read the book to find out what happens.
